Founders’ Study Abroad Scholarship Application
(In honor of Art Adams, JoAnn McCarthy and Dick Wood)

ICISP (Illinois Consortium for International Studies and Programs) Scholarships are in the amount of $500 for summer and $1,000 for semester programs. Recipients of the scholarship are expected to serve as ICISP Student Ambassadors. Ambassadors’ deliverables are listed in the application.

Students participating in an ICISP program are eligible to apply. All eligible programs include:

Austria (Salzburg): Fall, Spring and Summer programs

Canada (Toronto): Summer only program

Costa Rica (San Jose): Summer only program

England (Canterbury): Fall and Spring programs

France (Dijon): Summer only program

Ghana (Accra) Summer only program

Ireland (Carlow): Fall, Spring and Summer programs

Spain (Seville): Fall, Spring and Summer programs

Please note that any programs on the study abroad page listed under “Other Programs” are not eligible for ICISP scholarships.

 Application deadlines:

  • Oct. 15 for Spring programs
  • Feb. 15 for Summer programs
  • May 15 for Fall programs.
  • Applications must be signed by and submitted to the ICISP office from your ICISP representative.

Critical Language Scholarship

CLS aims to increase the number of Americans studying and mastering 14 critical languages through fully-funded summer language institutes. Participants are expected to continue language study beyond the CLS experience and apply the language skills to future academic and professional goals. Application deadline is early Nov.

Boren Award for International Study (NSEP)

Boren scholarships fund American undergraduate students as they acquire language skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the security of our nation. (Study in the United States, Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand is excluded.) Scholarships vary from $2,500 to $20,000 depending on the length of the program. An 8-week summer STEMS scholarship is also available.

BUTEX (British Transatlantic Exchange Association)

To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a place as a study abroad in England at an institutional member of the British Transatlantic Exchange Association. Application deadline is May.

Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship

Applicants must be receiving a Pell Grant at time of application or prove that he/she will receive a Pell Grant during the study abroad term. Recipients are awarded up to $5,000 depending on the length of the program. There is a $3,000 supplement for students studying “critical languages”. The application deadline is Oct. (early decision) and March for Summer and Fall programs and Oct. for Spring programs. (Summer programs must include in-country stays of at least 4 weeks.)

Freeman/Asia Scholarship

Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to study in any of 15 countries. Stipends of $3,000 for summer, $5,000 for a semester and $7,000 for a year-long study are available. Application deadline is March (summer) and April (Fall/year-long).

Fund for Education Award Scholarships

Fund for Education Award Scholarships are up to $10,000 for study abroad. Minimum program length is 4 weeks. Non-traditional study abroad students are encouraged to apply. Deadline for all programs is early Jan.

First Trip

We strive to increase diversity in study abroad and international affairs by alleviating inequitable barriers for underrepresented college students to travel abroad for the first time and pursue global careers.

Our scholars pursue meaningful study abroad trips to countries in Latin America, Africa, South Asia, and Eastern Europe. First Trip scholars become global citizens who add exceptional value to their learning environments and professional organizations!
