General Information
Explore the world and gain invaluable intercultural experience by participating in the semester abroad
program in Kunming, China. Live in the beautiful city of Kunming, called the “City of Eternal Spring”
because of its weather. The city has a warmer and much milder climate than most other Chinese cities.
Yunnan University’s main campuses are located in the provincial capital city of Kunming. Yunnan
University was founded in 1922. Today, there are approximately 19,872 students and 2,372 staff and
faculty members at Yunnan University. The university partners in more than 100 countries and currently
there are an estimated 1,600 international students studying at Yunnan.
Program Description:
This study abroad program is only available each spring semester. The program includes tuition for
twelve college credits, international airfare, in-country travel, cultural excursions, shared lodging, and
travel insurance. Students participating in the China study abroad program will be required to take the
program classes taught at the Yunnan campus in English, or in Chinese for language courses. Students
must take a minimum of four courses.
Academics:
Students must enroll in 12-15 credit hours. Required Courses include: Chinese 121, Beginning Chinese I;
Chinese 122, Beginning Chinese II; Humanities 129, Introduction to East Asian Civilization; and
Humanities 299, Chinese Speaking/Listening/Culture. Students will additionally have the opportunity to
take Chinese culture courses at their own expense.
Elective Courses (courses subject to change)
Field trips in and around Kunming are arranged by Yunnan University. As examples, for Spring 2020,
three trips were planned: Ethnic village, Stone Forest, and Lijiang and Dali. Students will also have some
free time to do independent traveling to cities outside of Kunming. Possibilities: Beijing, Shanghai,
Chengdu, Xi’an, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.
Room and Board:
Students reside in university sponsored housing with other Chinese, American and other international
students. Rooms are typically double occupancy, with the possibility of a trio, and each room has its own
bathroom. Meals are not included in the cost of the program, but food is relatively inexpensive in China.
Students will have access to traditional Chinese foods as well as to Western cuisine.
The campus is close to many cultural sites and attractions, and there are also affordable and good places
to eat near the campus. Students will be located near quaint old neighborhoods as well as close to
modern shopping areas.
Eligibility:
- 18 years or older at program start date
- Completed at least 12 credit hours of college coursework with an overall 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale
- Completed English Composition or the equivalent with a grade of “B” or better
