It’s estimated that over half of Toronto’s residents were born outside Canada, and despite its complex makeup, the city’s motto is “Diversity is our Strength”. Toronto prides itself on its wide range of cultures, food and arts. In the summer Toronto is a blast: a vibrant, big-time city abuzz with activity. Some of the world’s finest restaurants are found here, alongside eclectic festivals, world-class sports, and the center for technology, entertainment and business in Canada. Humber Polytechnic is located within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. Known as Adoobiigok [A-doe-bee-goke],  the “Place of the Alders” in Michi Saagiig [Mi-Chee  Saw-Geeg] language, the region is uniquely situated along the Humber River Watershed, which historically provided an integral connection for Anishinaabe [Ah-nish-nah- bay], Haudenosaunee [Hoeden-no-shownee], and Wendat [Wine-Dot] peoples between the Ontario Lakeshore and the Lake Simcoe/Georgian Bay regions. Now home to people of numerous nations, Adoobiigok continues to provide a vital source of interconnection for all.

Program Description:

Spend three weeks at Humber Polytechnic Global Summer School! The Illinois Consortium for International Studies and Programs (ICISP) is pleased to provide a summer study abroad program to Humber Polytechnic in Toronto, Canada. The program is designed for curious and passionate students ready to take on world issues in creative short-term courses in Toronto, Canada. Get ready for experiences that you’ll never forget this summer: lifelong friends, exceptional conversations, industry connections and insight into Canadian culture.
Academics
Accommodations

On-campus accommodation is included as part of your Global Summer School program fee. You will live at Humber’s Lakeshore Campus, only a 10-minute walk to Lake Ontario. Enjoy an easy public transportation route to thriving downtown Toronto, allowing you to enjoy your free time taking in the restaurants, nightlife, sports, live music, theatre, shopping and waterfront culture of the city.

Room and Board include:

Excursions and Extra-curriculars

The program includes a full social calendar outside of the classroom to help you meet new people and enjoy Toronto! Some activities include field trips to Niagara Falls and Canada’s Wonderland amusement park, a bus tour of Toronto, and a Boat Party on Lake Ontario. Students can also join many fun optional activities such as movie night, canoeing, treetop trekking, board game night, Blue Jays baseball game, and more. The cost of transportation and entry fees for all cultural excursions are included in the program cost.

Eligibility
  • 18 years or older
  • 2.5 cumulative GPA (on 4.0 scale)
  • Completion of at least 12 college credits by the time of departure
  • Completion of one college writing course (commonly known as English Composition I and/or II, or its equivalent) with a grade of B or better, by the time of departure. (NOT required for Humber…)

Additional Information

Enroll in the U.S. Dept of State Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) https://secure.login.gov/  to receive important updates about your destination. STEP is a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals to register planned travel abroad. Get updates about health, weather, safety, and security for your destination. Plan ahead using information from the local U.S. embassy. Help the embassy or consulate contact you if there’s an emergency like a natural disaster, civil unrest, or a family emergency.

  • Before you depart, make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned return date.
  • Always keep digital and physical copies of important documents like your passport, visa, and insurance details.
  • Research the local transportation options and familiarize yourself with the best routes to your university and other key locations.

It’s important to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, including evacuation. Consider packing a travel first-aid kit with essentials like band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and any personal medications. Familiarize yourself with the local healthcare system and know the location of the nearest hospital or clinic at your destination.
