Introduction

Study for a month in the summer in the historic and hi-tech city of Hyderabad, India. Hyderabad is located in the south-central part of India, in the state of Telangana. A city of around 7 million people, this “city of pearls”, rich in historical sites from the times of the Nizams and Qtub Shahi rulers, is a vibrant, modern, economic and technological hub in India. This program is offered through a partnership with Oakton Community College and the English and Foreign Languages University.

Program Description

The English and Foreign Languages University (E-FLU) is a Central University located in the heart of the city. The student population is made up of Indian students from all across India, as well as international students from numerous countries, who are studying English, one of the Indian languages, or any of the Modern Languages. The cultural studies department also offers classes in literature, film, philosophy and history.

• One overnight field trip and numerous local field trips

SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIP – SUMMER 2017 ONLY – 4 $500 ICISP Scholarships available exclusively for students studying in India. Contact your ICISP Representative for application information.

Academics

Students will receive up to 6-7 transferable college credits. All students will take one 3-credit course taught by the American professor who accompanies the students to India. The course varies, depending on the instructor selected, among South Asian Literature, South Asian Humanities / Philosophy, and South Asian History. The second 3-credit course, taught by an Indian faculty member, will also vary among Introduction to Film, Indian Art and Culture, and Indian Literature, for example. Exact courses will be determined by Nov. 1 of each year for the following Summer. For additional information, please contact the ICISP Representative at your institution.

Trips, Excursions, and Activities

Students have the opportunity to participate in several excursions, including a weekend trip to the Ajanta and Ellora caves in Maharashtra, and a variety of local field trips, which are all included in the cost. An optional trip to New Delhi and Agra (the Taj Mahal) may be planned as well (not included in the program cost) based on student interest.

Room and Board

Housing is provided in the International Dorm at E-FLU (single air conditioned room with shared bath and kitchenette). A stipend will be provided to students to cover the costs of three meals / day. Limited cooking facilities are available in the dorm, and inexpensive student cafeterias are available on campus.

2.75 GPA

Completion of English Composition I with a “B” or better

One semester of completed college credit
